What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for adults age 65 and older, as well as some younger individuals with qualifying disabilities or medical conditions.

Many people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65 and may need to choose a Medicare plan during a specific enrollment period.

Medicare Made Simple

Medicare Part A

Helps cover hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B

Helps cover doctor visits, preventive care, outpatient services, and medical supplies.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Offered through private insurance companies and often combines Parts A and B with additional benefits.

Medicare Part D

Helps cover prescription medications.

Why Planning Ahead Matters

As you approach Medicare eligibility, it’s important to review your healthcare coverage options carefully. Choosing a plan that includes your trusted providers can help avoid disruptions in care and ensure you continue receiving the services you need.

Understanding Your Medicare Enrollment Timeline

The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
For example, if your birthday is June 15, your enrollment window runs from March 1 through September 30.

Your Medicare Enrollment Countdown

3 Months Before Your Birthday

Enrolling early may help your coverage begin on the first day of your birthday month.

During Your Birthday Month

If you enroll during your birthday month, your coverage typically begins on the first day of the following month.

1–3 Months After Your Birthday Month

If you enroll later in your enrollment period, your coverage generally begins on the first day of the month after you enroll.

Why Timing Matters

Planning ahead can help you avoid delays in coverage and ensure you choose a Medicare plan that meets your healthcare needs.
